ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES
IMPORTANT TERMS:
· Afforestation: Plantation of tree to grow new forests.
· Acid Rain ( Acid Precipitation): Precipitation of acids like sulphurous acid and sulphuric acid formed by the reactions of sulphur dioxide and sulphur trioxide gases present in the atmosphere as pollutants.
· Biomagnification: The process of increase in the concentration of a pollutant with increasing trophic level in a food chain.
· BOD(Biochemical Oxygen Demand): The amount of dissolved oxygen needed by microorganisms in decomposing the organic wastes present in water.
· CO2 Fertilization Affect: The response of plants to the elevated concentration of CO2.
· Global Warming: The increase in the global mean temperature due to increased concentration of green house gases in the atmosphere.
· Green house Gases: The atmospheric gases like Co2, CH4, CFCs and N2O which absorb outgoing infrared radiation from the earth.
· Green house Effect: Warming up of the earth by the absorption of outgoing infrared radiation by the green house gases present in the atmosphere.
· Jhuming: The practice of rising of crops on the ash, produced by cutting down forest trees and setting them on fire.
· Ozone Hole: Refers to the thinning of stratospheric ozone layer during spring.
· Photochemical Smog: A fogy smoke formed as a result of photochemical reaction between the products of incomplete combustion of petrol and diesel and oxides of nitrogen.
· Smog: A product of smoke and fog.
Soot: Black coloured particulate pollutants produced due to incomplete combustion of hydrocarbons.
